July 18 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Thatcher’s Gourmet Popcorn uses small batches to create delicious, gourmet popcorn in over 50 flavors, from sweet to savory. Their mission: make the tastiest popcorn you’ve ever had, perfect for any occasion.

But hey, don’t take our word for it, join us in Cafe 300 to sample this local treat with today’s Pop In From The Neighborhood.

Craving more than a taste?  Here’s a few kernels of trivia on one of our favorite snacks!

Ancient history: Did you know popcorn is an ancient snack? Archeologists found evidence of people enjoying popcorn in Mexico over 5,000 years ago!

Scientific snack: The secret to popcorn’s magic pop is a tiny kernel called the hull. When heated, the moisture inside turns to steam, building pressure that bursts the hull and explodes the fluffy starch inside out!

Popping power: Speaking of explosions, popcorn kernels are tiny missiles! They can launch themselves out at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour when popping.

Movie magic: Ever wonder why popcorn became a movie favorite? It all started in 1885 with a Chicago candy store owner named Charles Cretors. He invented the first commercial popcorn machine, making it easier and faster to enjoy this tasty treat.

The US is the popcorn king!  Americans go through an average of 17 billion quarts of popcorn every year. That’s enough to fill the Empire State Building a whopping 18 times over!
