Love Food, Love Poke

January 8, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

At its simplest, poke is a dish of seasoned raw fish that has been diced into large cubes.  Loosely translated from Hawaiian, poke means “to cut into pieces” in English. The dish has existed on the Hawaiian islands for hundreds of years, and it’s pronounced poh-keh.

Due to the long history of Japanese influence on Hawaii, there’s often a Japanese flair to the accompanying seasoning and sauces, and often the fish sits on top of steamed rice.

In addition being delicious, Poke is also healthy;

  • Just 4 oz. poke provides half a day’s worth of lean protein for most people.
  • Eating fish two times a week supports heart health and immunity, and may even help ward off depression.
  • Poke made from fish is a nutrient powerhouse, providing vitamins B-12, C, D, iron, zinc, folate, and potassium. It’s also a rich source of omega-3 fats while being low in saturated fat.
